UKI

A delightful village on the South Arm of the Tweed River, Uki was originally the centre of the cedar trade in the late 19th century. As the land was cleared, many dairy farms were established and the village included a butter factory, school, churches, bank and store. However the postwar decline in dairying led to a general population drift from the region, and it is only in the last two decades that the situation is changing again.

Today Uki retains a farming base, with some beef and sugar, as well as many niche operations including coffee, tea and bamboo. Nearby Mt Warning attracts tourists from all over the world, and recently the bushwalkers have been joined by people interested in the spiritual significance of the site to the indigenous people of the area. The town has a progressive outlook, with new cafes, galleries and guesthouses being opened up in the heritage buildings.

CRYSTAL CREEK

This locality was named for the crystals which were found in the area in the 1850's, but today the scenic farm and rainforest areas adjoining the Mount Warning foothills are home to several stylish bed and breakfasts, with proximity to both the Brisbane and Byron Bay a drawcard. Apart from nearby Mt Warning, the area has a unique miniature horse stud, which includes a café and a tourist train ride.

STOKERS SIDING

Once a train stop for the busy banana industry, the 1894 station is now a general store/post office which also incorporates a licensed café; furniture hand-crafted from camphor laurel is also sold there. The village is noted for the long-running pottery and gallery which is housed in a 1921 heritage building across the street. A garage (specialising in VW's) provides petrol, and there is a nearby bed and breakfast on a coffee plantation.

TYALGUM

This tiny village which was established for cedar-getters in the late 19th century is now nationally famous for its annual classical music festival. Held in the historic Tyalgum Hall, this sturdy timber structure, complete with corrugated iron roof, has excellent acoustics (barring rain!).

Dairying, coffee and cattle are the industries, with eco-tourism developing, thanks to the many nearby national parks and Mt Warning. Local accommodation includes the hotel and guesthouses.

MIDGINBIL, KUNGHAR

The 162 hectare selection taken up in 1904 became Midginbil Hill, with an historic homestead built in 1911 still used, now part of a country resort with a wide range of tourist activities. Further up the road is the tiny village of Kunghur. The nearby Clarrie Hall Dam is a popular spot for catch and release fishing and canoeing, with picnic and barbecue facilities and a nearby general store.
